This documentary lays bare the soul of a revolution. In early 2011, Egyptian people of all backgrounds occupied Tahrir Square in protest against rampant corruption and extrajudicial violence committed by the Mubarak regime. When it was overthrown, the power vacuum was replaced by a similar hostile force in the form of the military, and then later, Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Many protesters were brutalized and killed. In one particularly potent scene, a canister of nerve gas is shown to be American-made.
The band of activists at the center of this film are involved with the protests from the very start. One of them, Ahmed Hassan, says at one point, “As long as there’s a camera, the revolution will continue.” Heartbreaking but essential viewing.
